Artistic Director of Orlando Ballet, I feel it is my
mission to make ballet relevant to the world we live in
today. It makes sense to provide our audiences with
presentations that explore contemporary choreography,
music and subject matter, while continuing to preserve
the classic ballets that have stood the test of time.
We open the 37th season of Orlando Ballet with Giselle.
This production is a timeless classic that even today
mystifies and transports the viewer with simple, yet
powerful artistic expression. The Nutcracker, hailed by
the Orlando Sentinel, returns for the 2010 holiday
season with renewed zest and energy.
Battle of the Sexes will return in February as a sequel to
last year’s thrilling production. Battle of the Sexes: II will
showcase more of the provocative and athletic dance
that thrilled audiences in the 2010 production. We will
also be presenting our second annual fundraiser
Bailamos! in March; an evening of latin-themed ballet
featuring red-hot dancing and sizzling new choreography.
Finally, we close the season with a 2 act rendition of
Carmen. Based on the opera of the same name, this
work translates into a dance interpretation with
beautifully untamed and sensual physicality.
In my second year as Artistic Director, I have to say that
the changes that have occurred are both inspiring and
gratifying. We are on a fantastic journey into a new
world for Orlando Ballet, which has now come to
include touring engagements in Tampa and Daytona
Beach, as well as other opportunities. I thank the
dancers for their tireless commitment, Joey and Yan for
always being at my side and the entire company and
Board for enabling this journey to continue moving
forward. And finally, thanks to you, our audience, for
your continued support. Without you, none of this
would be possible.
