2012 Summer Intensive Information

Classes Offered

Students dance an average of 6 hours per day Monday through Friday and an additional 2.5 hours on Saturdays. Both programs place a strong emphasis on ballet technique training, but also offer supplementary classes in the areas listed below. The 5-week Orlando program also offers a variety of performing opportunities.

Ballet
Students will be placed in a level to best help them progress. All accepted students must have an intermediate to advanced background. Emphasis is placed on discipline, musicality, and technique. Girls must have prior experience en pointe.

Pointe/Mens
Pointe class builds foot articulation and strength and also incorporates classical variations for the students to learn. Mens class builds strength necessary for bravura dancing.

Partnering
Partnering class is offered for advanced students only. All boys will take partnering. Girls must have advanced training, strength, and flexibility in addition to significant prior pointe training.

Stretch/Conditioning
Specially trained stretch teachers help students to lengthen tendons and muscles and build necessary strength for professional ballet.

Character, Jazz, & Modern
These classes make a more well-rounded dancer and allow students to feel greater confidence and expansion in their dancing.

Repertoire*
Each level learns a classic or original work, which is performed at the program’s conclusion.

Julie KentSeminars offered include acting, music, and nutrition. *5-Week Orlando students only


Instructors
Under the leadership of School Director Dierdre Miles Burger and Artistic Director Robert Hill, Orlando Ballet’s staff features the finest in classical ballet instruction. OBS offers American training incorporating precise food work, classical port de bras, and preparation for today’s classical ballet companies.

A complete list of full-time faculty is available online here. The two-week program in Jacksonville will also feature faculty members from the Florida Ballet Training Center. Additional guest teachers will be brought in each week and additional information on guest teachers will be available in the Spring.


Payment & Scholarship Information

A non-refundable deposit will be due within two weeks following a student’s acceptance notification. The remaining balance for the Jacksonville program will be due by May 4, 2012. The remaining balance for the Orlando program will be due by May 11, 2012. Orlando Ballet School offers a limited number of full and partial scholarships based on a serious interest and potential talent for classical ballet. Scholarships will be awarded, if applicable, upon acceptance into the summer program. A limited number of financial aid awards may also be available. Financial aid applications will be available in January and will be due by March 9, 2012.


Orlando Program
Five Weeks: June 25-July 27, 2012

Students travel from across the country and around the world to train with the internationally-renowned faculty during the five-week program in Orlando. The focus of the program is on technique training, but all students also participate in the showcase performance at the end of the summer and advanced students have the opportunity to perform for the public. Classes are held in the historic Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Downtown Orlando overlooking the beautiful Lake Ivanhoe. There are six spacious studios which all have sprung floors. Two studio from the OBS South Campus will also be used, both of which feature Harlequin sprung floors.

Tuition: $1625

Boarding students are housed in apartment style dorms with bathrooms and kitchens on the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management campus. This campus features 24/7 gated security and access to a swimming pool. Full meal service is included and transportation on charter buses between OBS and the Rosen College will be provided. Optional outings to the area theme parks and other destinations will be offered. Boarding students will check in on Sunday, June 24 and check out on Saturday, July 28.

Jacksonville Summer Intensive
Two Weeks: June 11-23, 2011

The two-week program in Jacksonville in partnership with Florida Ballet offers students small class sizes and an opportunity to intensely focus on their technique training. Classes will be held at the Florida Ballet Training Center, a renovated warehouse space in Downtown Jacksonville with exposed brick walls, 17 foot ceilings, lobby, dressing rooms and break room. Additional classes will also be held at the nearby Ballet Arts Centre. Families are invited to observe classes on the final day of the program.

Tuition: $825

Boarding students will reside at the University of North Florida in dormitories with private bathrooms. Full meal service is included and transportation on charter buses between Florida Ballet Training Center and UNF will be provided. Optional outings to the beach and other destinations may be offered. Boarding students will check in on Sunday, June 10 and check out on Saturday, June 23.

2012 Audition Tour

Auditions are open to intermediate and advanced students who will be at least 11 years old by the start of the 2012 Summer Intensive. Female students must be en pointe.

OBS does not rre-register for auditions. Please arrive 30 minutes early for registration. There is a $25 audition fee, payable in cash or check to OBS. Students interested in the Orlando Ballet School Academy or Oralndo Ballet II program for the 2012-13 season must submit a photo and resume. Otherwise, photos and resumes are accepted, but not required. Audition results will be emailed within two weeks of each audition.

To submit a DVD audition please mail a completed copy of the audition registration form, a $35 audition fee, and your DVD to the address listed at the bottom of the form. Your DVD should include center adagio, turns, small & large jumps, girls en pointe (five minutes maximum). Students should be in practice clothes. DVD auditions are due by February 18, 2012.

We will also accept in person auditions at OBS until all spaces are filled. Please call 407.426.1733 x 10 to schedule an audition. A $25 audition fee will apply.
